Microsoft Intune

Microsoft’s history of upgrading its mobile operating systems is littered with tears, frustration and stories of heartbreak from former users. To say, Microsoft has had trouble shifting its user base from one operating system upgrade to the next, may be a bit of an understatement.

However, as the company claims its newer focus in mobile operating systems is a play on gaining enterprise and business customer adoption rather than the more immediate consumer-facing sector, it is using a new tool to help aid current Windows Phone 8.1 users in upgrading to Windows 10 Mobile.

Microsoft is employing Microsoft Intune to help businesses upgrade fleets of Windows Phone 8.1 devices to Windows 10.

Granted, this new technique will only work if business customers have already employed Microsoft Intune to manage their current Windows Phone deployments. It remains, any business using SCCM as its Mobile Device Manager Authority in Hybrid mode can follow some simple steps in using Intune to migrate Windows Phone 8.1 devices over to Windows 10 Mobile.

A Microsoft Field Engineer walks customers through the seven-step process to enable a Windows Phone 8.1 device to upgrade to a Windows 10 Mobile device.

A few things of note, the process being examined is intended for customers managing a fleet of Windows Phone 8.1 devices through an already established Mobile Device Management system. Therefore, it’s probably not recommended that retail owners attempt to circumvent Microsoft’s imposed device restrictions for Windows 10 Mobile using this process.

Also, Microsoft’s Field Engineer is encouraging the following:

  • Make sure your phones are capable of running Windows 10. The list of supported devices is here, or you can install the Upgrade Advisor App on a test phone to determine if an upgrade will be possible
  • Phones need to be connected to WI-FI or mobile data
  • Phones need to be sufficiently charged
