Microsoft’s Surface Book 2-in-1 is arguably one of the most innovative personal computers of the last few decades. Combining the lapability of a clamshell notebook with the flexibility of a pen- and touch-enabled tablet, the Surface Book utilizes a number of new technologies and concepts in offering a unique form factor for Windows 10.

Of course, such an innovative machine doesn’t emerge from a design team’s collective brain as a finished product, but rather goes through numerous iterations before a final design is solidified. Today, Microsoft head of hardware design Ralf Groene published an image on Instagram (via Windows Central) showing some of the prototypes that sacrificed themselves for the Surface Book’s eventual design.

We’re not surprised by the number of parts and pieces that were tried out before the design was finalized. Now, we’re just looking forward to seeing how Microsoft follows up the first generation of Surface Book sometime (hopefully) early in 2017.
